This book is a survey of marine geologic resources and the exploration methods for finding them. Alas, it was written in 1971, so it is somewhat out of date compared to modern geophysical techniques. I am actually rather surprised it is still in print; it is clearly a testimony to modern electronic publishing. It was intended to accompany a course in MIT’s Ocean Engineering Department for non-geologists. As such, it is probably still a reasonable survey course for that audience because it provides an overview of geology and geophysics in general. So if you are looking for a short, easy read about a field you know little about, it is probably worthwhile.
Sadly, there is an egregious error in the book that was not my doing. At that time MIT Press had an editor who tended to make changes of fact in the galleys without telling the author. In this case, the editor replaced my reference to communicating with submerged instruments via sonar with radio communication. Apparently the editor slept through 8.02 and was not aware that sea water is highly conductive, so any EM radiation is highly attenuated except at ultra low frequencies (i.e., << 1 Hz).
